Project Runway Inspired Unconventional Materials Project

Project Runway Inspired

Unconventional Materials Project

I love Project Runway and many of my students are fashion obsessed. This coincidence gave me the idea of creating an Unconventional Materials Project. If you have never seen this amazing show let me briefly describe it to you.

Each week competitors are given a challenge to create an outfit based on that week's particular theme or materials.

As a class we watched 2 different unconventional challenges.

In Season 8, we watched the designers create a line out of hard and soft materials from the flower shop and hardware store.

and in Season 11 we saw contestants create looks entirely out of materials from a party store.

For example, this dress is made 100% out of cocktail napkins.

And now it is our turn.

First we started sketching, just like the designers.

We have students using everything from candy to cds to create their looks.

Check back in the coming weeks to see our final projects!

Keith Haring- Drawing the Line- Sub Plan

Keith Haring

Drawing the Line

Sometimes you need a sub plan. Drawing the Line is a video about Keith Haring, his imagery, and how he began making his subway illustrations.

This is the perfect 30 minute video; long enough to take up a good chunk of class time, short enough to keep student's interests.

School Benefit

Every year our school holds a benefit to support our young women's dreams at the Chicago Cultural Center

and

all proceeds go towards scholarships for our girls!

My class is in charge of the center pieces as well as some of the auction items. Take a look and see what we have in the works!

Stencil Heaven- Banksy Banksy and more Banksy

Here at school, we just finished up watching the film, Exit Through the Gift Shop

This film (fiction or nonfiction), tells the story of a filming Frenchman, who stumbles upon the world of street art. Though his journey filming he meets some of the most predominate figures in the world of street art.

EX. - Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Swoon, just to name a few.

The narrator of this story, Banksy, leads us through the story of street art, transforming into high art. Students learn about Banksy's creations, viewing his creative process. They also learn why he stays an anonymous figure.

Something to Spray

After viewing the film, we discuss Banksy's work and the meaning behind it. We examine his motivation and inspiration to pull inspiration of our own.

We then compare Grafitti and Street Art in our own neighborhoods to that in the movie. The conversation often lead to the discussion of gangs, territory, and violece. This is our jumping off point!

What would happen if while walking down the street we saw images for symbols and hope instead of gangs and violence?

Drum roll please!!!!

Here is our Stencils for Peace Project!

Starting this week, students will be thinking about symbols of Peace, Love, Hope, etc. They will then create sketches to turn into stencils!

Arturo Herrera Collage Boot Camp

After looking at Arturo Herrera's work, the students were asked to make a collage inspired by Herrera's art.

To ensure the students were using unconventional materials, I have created a boot camp. This boot camp includes painting paper with marbles, straws, and toothbrushes. This is truly a time for the students to "Play".

To make this project successful, the students also needed to get the majority of their materials from the class "Scrap Bin".

Below are some boot camp photos as well as their finished work!

Enjoy!
